OMPHALOCELE

Midline defect of the anterior abdominal wall secondary to failure of the lateral, caudal and cephalic mesodermal folds to form the normal umbilical ring during the third to fourth week of gestation. This results in herniation of the intraabdominal contents into the base of the umbilical cord.

Incidence: 1:4,000 - 1:5,500 pregnancies (1).
